Meanings follow the IANA HTTP Status Code Registry. Application behavior still depends on the relevant HTTP specification and server implementation.

How to use this http status code lookup

  1. Enter a code such as 404, a phrase such as redirect, or a class such as 5xx.
  2. Select Find status code.
  3. Review and copy the matching registered code names.

What does an HTTP status code mean?

An HTTP status code is a three-digit result sent with a response. The first digit identifies the broad outcome class, while the registered phrase gives the standard name. A code alone does not explain every application failure: response headers, the request method, the response body and the relevant HTTP specification determine what a client should do next.

Which HTTP status class should you check?

1xx codes are informational, 2xx codes report success, 3xx codes describe redirection, 4xx codes identify client-side request problems, and 5xx codes identify server failures. Search a whole class such as 4xx when diagnosing an unfamiliar response family, or enter an exact number when logs already provide the code.

What is the difference between 401 and 403?

401 Unauthorized means the request lacks acceptable authentication credentials and commonly invites the client to authenticate. 403 Forbidden means the server understood the request but refuses to fulfill it, even if the client is identified. Applications sometimes use these codes differently for security reasons, so confirm the API contract and response body before changing authentication logic.
